Music- Second Nine Weeks
Week One- Nov. 3-7
Beginning our second nine weeks with Music, the first grade classes reviewed the music vocabulary word, "Steady Beat"! The students learned that their are TWO types of steady beat, little and big steady beat. They kept steady beat in their feet while stomping around like giants and chanting the poem, "Long Steps, Strong Steps." We also learned about our new note friends, SOL and MI. While listening to the story "Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater", the students were asked to sing the words "pumpkin pie" to the tune of "SOL SOL MI" whenever they appeared in the story. The students reviewed the rhythm syllables Ta and Ti-ti. They students played rhythms written with pumpkin/Titi and pie/Ta symbols using rhythm sticks.
Week Two- Nov. 10-14
The students reviewed that there are three types of voices we use in music class: speaking, whisper, and singing. When we sing, we have to use both a HIGH and LOW singing voice. The students explored high and low by singing the song "Down, Down Yellow and Brown", an Autumn song about how leaves fall from the trees and change colors. The students pretended they were the trees and swayed to the steady beat with their leaves while moving from high to low. The concept of high and low was reinforced as students were assigned a BELL to play and a MALLET. The students would play their note on the steady beat as the MELODIC DIRECTION of the song moved from high to low. The students also continued to work on their understanding of Titi and Ta by echoing back rhythm patterns played by the teacher.
Week Three- Nov. 17-21
They students began class by learning a CIRCLE DANCE called "Old Brass Wagon". They students were even able to suggest their own movements and incorporate them into the song. We also completed our first listening activity of Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons "Autumn". The students listened to the three MOVEMENTS (each different section of an orchestral piece is known as a movement) and drew pictures of how the music made them feel. The COMPOSER (a person who writes/composes music) was actually inspired to write the musical piece from a poem about I.) Peasants harvesting their crops and then celebrating the coming of Autumn. II.) The peasants sleeping after all their hard work. III.) A group of hunters going on a hunt at dawn with their dogs and chasing the animals through the forest. After completing their drawings, the students listened to the piece again and followed along with their LISTENING MAP which guided them through the musical story.
